2023-24 SEASON
2022-2023
ABBEY HURRICANES – Captain – Gemma Muttitt – SR Div 3 – 6th
The regional team have a fantastic squad of 14 talented netball players, strengthened this year by new and returning (from pregnancy) members. The standard of the league and indeed Division 3 has increased another level this season, with Matrix and MK Netters (new qualifiers into regional) dominating the division and winning all their matches convincingly. Throughout the season the team have worked hard for each other on court and have developed key principles of play, coached by the amazing Trish. This has been evident in matches and we have produced some fantastic moments of play both in attack and defence. The only missing link, consistency in all 4 quarters! Every match was tough but we fought incredibly hard to stay in the league with narrow loses and vital one goal wins.
The start of the season saw us take on Woodley and although we lost, we came out with lots of positives and were ready to take on CD Phoenix. We had one of our best games and came away with a 20 goal victory. Next were local rivals Trinity, unfortunately we lost by 5 goals but we got our revenge in the return fixture winning by 25 goals. We also secured two close, very hard fought 1/2 goal wins against a good Sussex Lighting side, which in the end made sure we finished out of the relegation zone. At the time of writing, we have one more game to play; a home game against Sussex NRG. The match has no effect on final positions but we hope to come away with the win. Hopefully, we will be able to keep the core of our squad next year, as they have found some great connections on court and there is a lot more great netball to come!!
Hurricanes could not have got through the season without additional help, we would like to thank all those that fulfilled the scorer/timer/primary career roles this season. Particularly, Jo Davies, Sally Muttitt, Katie’s boyfriend???, Tash Vickers, Richard Cook and Chris. Thanks must also go to Gemma and Sarah who, as well as playing, do all the admin. for the team, which isn’t made easy by South region – you are both the unsung heroes of the team.

ABBEY ICE – CAPTAIN TASH WHITE – PREM PLUS 2nd
Ice have had a great season! With both familiar faces and new players mainly in the defensive end, we quickly gelled to play some lovely netball. We had a good first half to the season, taking a bit of time to settle but finishing in the top 4. The league then split so the top 4 went into one and the bottom 4 went into a separate league. We had a brilliant second half of the season, winning 4 games and drawing and losing 1 to the top team. We were on the same points as team in 1st but matrix managed to get a bonus point along the way. It’s has been a very enjoyable season with such a nice squad of girls to play with and to captain, some great netball played, brilliant interceptions, goals from edges of the D and off court and thankfully only one minor injury, eventually finishing a brilliant 2nd in the group 1 point behind matrix. A testament to the dedication and commitment shown throughout the season as we didn’t make it easy for ourselves at times!!
A special thanks to all those who stood in when injuries interfered- Lee-Anne and Katy - and to those who gave their time to coach and develop us as individuals and teams at training. We look forward to what will no doubt be another season of enjoyment and enthusiasm!

ABBEY LIGHTNING – CAPTAIN CATH FRENCH – ONL PREM Position TBC
After promotion last season, life in the Prem has been tougher. Lightning are yet to register a win after eight games, but we've come close on a number of occasions. The fixtures schedule has been disrupted because of freezing weather and problems with the central venue courts so we still have four games to play against bottom of the table teams. There's a realistic chance that we can stay in the Prem! Despite the difficult conditions the squad has remained positive and developed a sense of togetherness - we always give 100% in every match. Special thanks go to Laura, Lauren D and Eleanor who have helped with squad organisation. Fingers crossed for the remaining games!!!

ABBEY HURRICANES - SOUTH REGION
ABBEY HURRICANES – Gemma Muttitt – SR Div 2 7th
This season was a bit of a rollercoaster for Hurricanes with lots of ups and downs! We took the start of the season in our stride, and adapted quickly to new combinations, with two nail biting draws, one win and a loss in the first 4 games. The next few games we struggled to secure wins against in-form teams Swan and Sussex Storm, however we finished the first half of the season on a high with a win against Weston Park Blades, and sat comfortably mid table.
The second half of the season we struggled to find our form, unfortunately we lost a couple of players to pregnancy and injury, as well as struggling at times with availability. We secured wins against Meon and Sussex NRG, but made life difficult for ourselves losing to Eagles, CD Phoenix, Swan and Sussex Storm. An outstanding performance in the penultimate game of the season, lead to an impressive win against Sussex NRG. However, things were looking extremely tight at the bottom end of the table, but we couldn’t quite do enough in our ‘relegation battle’ last game of the season against Weston Park Blades. This was very disappointing, despite the girls giving it their all on court. This will see us play in Division 3 next season, where we are hoping to bounce back into form.
It’s important to mention that we would not have been able to play in this league without the help from numerous ‘voluntold’ scorers, timers and primary carers. We are particularly thankful to Sarah Whatman, for completing a significant amount of admin for us and Jo Davies, Sharon Taylor and Jo Pearce taking on scoring, PC and timing duties. Good luck to Rama Kieralla, who leaves us as she goes to University, you will be missed.

ABBEY ICE - OXFORDSHIRE PREM
ABBEY ICE – Captain Tash White
Prem Plus League Position – 3rd (4 points behind OSP in 2nd place)
Ice have had a great season, we started with a new team and quickly gelled to play some lovely netball.
With a few losses at the start of the season, we took a few games to find our feet but alongside some brilliant coaching by Trish and getting used to playing together we found our stride and won 7 out of the 8 games in the second half of the season! It’s has been a very enjoyable season with such a nice squad of girls to play with and to captain, some great netball played, brilliant interceptions, goals from edges of the D and off court and thankfully only one injury, eventually finishing a brilliant 3rd in the group. A special thanks to all those who stood in when covid and injuries interfered- Lee-Anne, Sarah, Hensley, Lauren Townson and Dallia - and to Trish and all the seniors who gave their time to coach and develop us as individuals and teams at training. We are also sad to see Kerry (our nippy centre court player) leave but wish her all the best with her move after 3 seasons in Ice. We look forward to the summer league and no doubt another season of enjoyment and enthusiasm!

ABBEY LIGHTNING - OXFORDSHIRE DIVISION 1
ABBEY LIGHTNING – Captain Cath French
ONL Div 1 League Position – 1st (Promotion to Prem next season)
Lightning had a very successful 2021-2022 winter season which resulted in promotion from Division 1 to Prem. We also beat Oxford Royals in the final game to finish top of division 1. This was very much a team effort, with every squad member contributing to these achievements. The group has always been very positive, and supportive of each other, even in the often cold and wet conditions at the central venue. Many thanks to the people who volunteered for duty nights and also to Laura, Kate and especially Lauren Davies who have stepped up to help when I've been busy with work. In summary, onwards and upwards into Prem!

ABBEY HURRICANES (Captain – Kirsty Heath)
Its been a pleasure welcoming returning, new and developing players into the Hurricanes squad, they have all bought invaluable skill to the team, improving the depth of our squad and settling in with ease into the Abbey NC family. Tash and Kate have provided much needed structure to our training sessions, each week has involved tactics and techniques that have often gone on to be integral parts to our game, the rest of the team have shown great willingness to try new things and have committed to utilising lessons learnt on court. Unfortunately, our results haven't gone as planned and we find ourselves in the spot for relegation into Div 2. It is so hard for any team to maintain good morale and commitment when results don't go in your favour. However, I'm so proud to be part of a team that has maintained determination and commitment throughout. We will no doubt come back next season with renewed enthusiasm and keen to do well. Finally, and probably most importantly, we are very grateful for the help we receive from volunteers, Sally, Chris and Sharon in particular have put significant hours in on the bench as our Primary Carer and/or on the officials table, we would not get through the season without them

Club member - Sukey 🙂 because she is a superstar on the comms and we'd all be lost without her 🙂

ABBEY ICE (Captain – Tora Pickup)
Ice had an enjoyable season and played some brilliant netball. Making the most of a great mix of fantastic new players and valuable old hands we settled in quickly and the first half of our season was looking rosy as we ended up second! The second half of the season included a few frustrating losses, unfortunately we ended up 4th (with two matches left to play). We were very disappointed not to be able to finish our season as planned - with a couple of wins against Trinity to lead us into the summer league! We’ll get them next year!! All in all, lots of fun and brilliant netball - even if we are the dinosaur team!
Special thanks to Tash V, Claire, Sarah, Rama and Sophie for playing for us and making such difference when they did. And we (especially me) really owe a lot to Tash V for her brilliant support both on and off the court.
We’re also very grateful to the Committee for all of their time and work, and especially to everyone who led such great training sessions.
Ice Awards:
Player: Tash W (would have been unanimous if she had voted for herself!)
Team member: Tora (although 5 players were nominated and this shows just how much of a team effort this season was).
Most improved: Showing prowess at both ends - a tied vote for Sukey and Vicky.
Nominations:
1) Club member of the year - I’d go with Tash V - for all the training and for supporting our team (and me)
2) The cat award (feisty and scrappy for the ball) - I’m assuming this has to be a nomination for our team? - I think Frances as rebounder extraordinaire and seemingly being quite happy to fight with GK or GS as necessary!
3) Little Miss Whoops - and why - Harriet G-J for accidentally kicking a door and breaking her toe... and then playing on it too soon and wondering why she wasn’t able to walk properly the next day...
4) Little Miss Quick - and why - Sarah - super speedy on court, and the quickest of us all, but also for her ability to turn from an amazing shooter into a stellar defender with incredible speed and efficiency!
Photo: embarrassingly I don’t have one that includes everyone, as Frances is missing from this one. But at least everyone else is there and this seems a good reflection of the season.

ABBEY BLIZZARD (Captain – Caitlin Allen & Coach – Sue Lyons)
Summary from coach – Sue Lyons
Blizzard - from new beginnings came great things.
A new team at the start of the season, not only to Prem Plus (with no team members having played there before), but also as a team. Which makes the final position of 2nd (as we would have beaten OSP 😁) in Prem Plus a massive achievement.
I was very proud to support Blizzard this year - and would like to praise all team members for real grit and determination to do well, in what weren't easy circumstances. Brilliant team effort from brilliant players.
Summary from captain (Caitlen Allen)
It’s been an absolute pleasure playing for blizzard this year. A team that had many well deserved wins whilst working well together as a team. Thankyou blizzard for making being a captain an easy and enjoyable experience.
Awards for Blizzard
Player of the Year: Lizzie
Team member of the year: Caitlin
Most improved player of the year: Joint Grace and Sophie
Club member of the year: Tash V
Nominations
The Cat Award: Ellen. Ellen was our sassiest player this year, when she wanted the ball she got that ball and she gave sass while doing so.
Little Miss Whoops- Grace, constantly pulled up for obstruction and contact only down to the fact she gave 100% throughout every match.
Little Miss Quick- Lizzy. This girl seems to just float around the court, always in the right position at top speed and able to stop and shoot just as fast. Impressive.

Oxfordshire League - Division 1
ABBEY LIGHTNING (Captain – Cath French)
Lightning were positioned 3rd in Division 1 when matches were halted, with 10 wins and 5 losses from 15 games played. Our performances improved over the course of the season allowing us to climb steadily up the league table. This progress is down to Drew's coaching and encouragement and was also helped by the arrivals of Zahra Jeffries and Kate Mulrey. The highlight of the first half of the season was a 33-32 win against second placed OSP, a match which we won comfortably second time around.
Note from Chair (Jo Davies) Lightning – ONL Div 1 had 3 matches left to play (as did all their opposition before the league was prematurely halted). The current standing left them at 3rd however 2nd position was within their reach had all matches been played. Currently Abbey Lightning at 54 points out of 73.
Awards to Lightning

Team Member of the Year – Cath French closely followed by Emily Curtis with votes also for Zahra Jeffries
Most improved Player – Won hands down by Hensley Ann Clark, with votes for Emily Curtis and Lauren Davies

2) The cat award (feisty and scrappy for the ball) - We're not really a team of catty players but an opposition coach described Zahra Jeffries as, "fierce but lovely".
3) Little Miss Whoops - Lizzie Storey who has been ill/ injured since Christmas.
4) Little Miss Quick - Kate Mulrey has injected plenty of pace into our attacking third since she joined.

ABBEY STORM (Captain – Holly Chesser)
Abbey Storm had a good season overall, due to us being a new team it took us a while to get used to how each other played. The second half of the season was much better, we only lost 2 games and we finished the season in the middle of the table. Towards the end of the season it was obvious that all our hard work at training had paid off. I would like to thank the team for all their hard work and commitment throughout the season making my job as captain easier, we had a lot of fun!
Note from the Chair – Jo Davies Storm – ONL Div 3 finished all their games and were placed a commendable 5th position out of 10 teams, 57 points out of 90.

Abbey Hurricane Team Report: Winter Season 17/18, Captains – Lucy Tolley and Patience Lewis
4th/8 in Div. 1 South Region League
Team members: Frances Dixon (GS/GA), Tash Watson (GS/GA), Lee-Anne Walker (GA/GS), Kate Ricks (WA/C), Becky Mailen (C/WA), Lucy Tolley (C/WA), Gemma Muttitt (WD), Ibiye Crook (WD/GD), Patience Lewis (GD/GK), Sarah Whatman (GK), Kirsty Heath (Chief Supporter/Coach/Team Manager)
Lucy and I took over the role of co-captains after Kirsty announced her pregnancy and although we would miss her on court, it was a pleasure to captain from the start. The team is committed, hard-working, fun and motivated. They devoted themselves to their training on Wednesdays but also in their spare time, ensuring they are fit enough and playing to the best of their ability. This has showed consistently throughout the season. We have grown as a team both on and off the court and this has made a real difference. We are proud of the team’s effort and feel that we have earned our position in the league this year.
After hard-fought play-offs last May, we were promoted into Division 1 and had one target this year – to stay up! It is with pleasure that I am able to say that we smashed our target out of the park. Every match was a tough one, but we started to make a name for ourselves, proving why we had been promoted to Division 1. We had a team that had strength in depth and it showed both on and off the court.
The start of the season saw us take on a very strong Dreams side and although we lost, we came out with lots of positives and were ready to take on Sussex NRG Tigers, also newly promoted. That match proved that we deserved to be in Division 1 and was the start of a very positive season. The first half of the season saw wins against Sussex NRG Tigers, CD Phoenix, Sussex Storm, Weston Park Blades – pretty impressive for a team that had just come up. However, as with all regional matches, they were so closely fought that it didn’t matter where each opponent was in the table. We had new additions (and returnees) to the squad but everyone slotted in really easily and it was nice to have so many options on the bench ready to come on. We worked hard for each other as a team and brought lots of ideas from training onto the court on Sundays, so thanks to all the coaches that stepped up over the season.
The second half of the season started with the same level of commitment as the first half. Although we still lost to our nemeses Eagles, Dreams and Rushmoor, the score lines were much closer. We had some goal-for-goal matches that went down to the wire but the fact that we were able to come away with a win shows the strength of our team, both physically and mentally.
Hurricanes could not have got through this season without help, on behalf of the squad I’d like to thank all those that fulfilled the scorer/timer/primary carer roles this season, particularly; Caroline Lewis, Sally Muttitt, Sue Lyons and Lydia Lyons. In addition to this, I’d like to thank Kate, who puts so much of her time and effort into both our squad and the rest of the club, including juniors. Without her continued hard work and commitment, we wouldn’t be where we are today and we owe a lot to her both as a coach and a player. Thank you Kate.

Abbey Ice Team Report: Winter Season, 17/18, Captains – Lucy Lindsay and Vicki Cathcart
5th/10 in Oxfordshire Premier Division
It has been a pleasure to co-captain the Ice squad this season and we have been lucky to have a squad mixed with experience and youth. As a team we have gelled well on court and have played some fantastic netball throughout. We were lucky to gain Imogen Jones, Libby Musty and Krissie Ilsley into the club at the start of the season and their enthusiasm both on and off the court has been great! We had a very strong start to the season, sitting at the top of the table for the majority of the first half and recording some strong wins over OSP A, Shrivenham DA and Trinity B. An unlucky loss against Abingdon Centre A due to injury and availability meant at Christmas we sat in third position. In January we really benefitted from the dynamism and energy that Gee Cornish brought into our centre court, and the return of Nikki Slatter gave us more variety and option in the defensive circle. Unfortunately we did lose Helen Davis and Vicki Cathcart to injury and Lucy Lindsay to pregnancy, and at times our availability in the second half of the season was inconsistent. We were unfortunate to lose to OSPA and Shrivenham DA second time round, and our final league position was 5th out of 10 teams.
Thank you to all those who have helped to keep the squad afloat, be it looking after the kit bag, giving coaching advice from the sideline, helping with warm ups, setting up doodle polls, collecting money or sending emails. It has been a real team effort and there’s been a great vibe throughout!

Abbey Lightning Team Report: Winter Season 17/18, Captains – Sukey McMaster, Lauren Davies and Aimee Peacock
6th/10 in Oxfordshire Division 1
Abbey Lightning again competed in Div. 1 of the Oxfordshire league in 2017/18. We had a reasonably large squad with a lot of the juniors joining us, some for the first time. The commitment shown by the majority of the squad was great and the attendance at training was fairly good by a core of the team.
We had a slightly rocky start to the season in terms of match availability but this picked up by mid-way through the first half of the season. Our results in the first half of the season were fairly mixed with some great wins and some losses that we felt should have been wins!
Following the December re-trials we had a slight change in team members. Tiga and Lily joined us with great success and Gemma “retired” to enjoy her pregnancy!
We had a more successful second half of the season after Christmas and the team morale was really strong. All members of the team were committed on court and we had some great matches. The number of players we had available to play at each match also improved and we were able to fend for ourselves throughout the rest of the season.
Over the season as a whole we improved as a team and saw great improvements in individual performances. Some great play and some fun, close matches in the second half of the season brought us to 6th place in the results tables. With the level of commitment shown in the latter half of the season it’s tempting to think that we could have aimed higher, so onwards and upwards!
Thanks to everyone who ran training sessions for us and umpired and scored and thank you also to those supporters, parents and squad members who came to watch us and cheer us on!

Abbey Storm Team Report: Winter Season 17/18 Captains – Sharon Johnson and Hannah Toohey
2nd/10 in Oxfordshire Division 3
Abbey Storm has had an amazing season, finishing 2nd in Division 3 and it has been a pleasure for both myself and Hannah to captain the team. We had a smaller squad this season with a few familiar faces but many new players including juniors.
Having a smaller squad helped in the early stages of the season as players got to know each other in training which translated onto the netball court. During the first half of the season Abbey Storm won 6 out of 10 games. The early weeks of the season were when games were lost as new players gelled and got to know each other’s game. Team chemistry developed on court with each game (game 1-loss, game 2-WIN, games 3/4-loss) but for every game lost in those early weeks bonus points were gained and every single player improved.
I encouraged commitment to training so that I could try out players in different court positions should others not be available and to further enhance team cohesion. I also asked players to highlight any training needs, so that training sessions could be adapted accordingly. The results of this was manifested on the netball court as each player gained more confidence, culminating in a 3-week winning streak for games 5 – 7. Game 8 was a close game we lost but bonus points were achieved; not disheartened by the loss, Abbey Storm picked themselves up and won the next 2 games before the Christmas break.
The 2nd half of the season saw the introduction of 2 new players, Cathie (WA) and Helen (GS/GA), as we had lost Channon (C) before Christmas. These additions strengthened our attack and shooting.
There were 8 games to be played and Abbey Storm won 5 of them. The losses came in the first 4 weeks similar pattern to the first half of the season, however, illness and player availability did play a small part in this, but team members asked themselves why they were losing games they should have won, especially against teams they’d beaten in the first half of the season.
Game 1 loss, as only 7 players available with 4 of us on court recovering from illness but surprisingly we managed to gain bonus points (such commitment!). Game 2 was a WIN and games 3/4 a loss but again bonus points were achieved. By then we had dropped to about 5th or 6th in the division. I asked Jo Davies and Sue Lyons to assist in the training sessions advising them of weaknesses I found in the teams court play. I told them to be hard on us in the coaching sessions and to offer advice to individual players; I had warned the team beforehand. These tailor-made sessions worked, as from games 5 to 8 Abbey Storm went on a 4 week winning streak to the end of the season rising from 5th/6th to 2nd in the division. Over the season the whole team made significant improvements in their game.
Our shooters, Lucy, Carly, Louise and Helen played brilliantly all season, new partnerships were formed. Louise one of our new players was a revelation from shy, low confidence at the start of the season to a very competent and accomplished shooter by the end of the season. Helen (GS) came in the 2nd half of the season and was voted player of the match on several occasions. Carly set the example to our new players converting shots from pretty much anywhere in the circle and Lucy also improved her shooting with great movement in the circle and always getting the rebounds. Lesley, even though not able to play much, her support and advice was invaluable to me.
Defence just 4 of us, was very strong, Nicole was new to the team and improved with every game. There were games where we stopped teams scoring for a whole quarter whilst our shooters capitalized on the turnovers. Alice Carr (WD) another new member improved dramatically, although not available for many games, every game she played she made a big difference, noticed by her fellow team members and of course our shooters capitalized on it. Hannah and Nicole formed a great partnership in the circle, a partnership which I did not want to break too much; I played only if the team was short, when injuries occurred or when a change was required to deal with certain shooters from the opposition.
Attack was also very strong, Vicky, Elizabeth, Cathie, Channon, Katie and Caitlin worked well together on court and always gave each other advice off the court between quarters. When we lost Channon before Christmas, Vicky stepped into the (C) role and played it really well. If Vicky was not available the others were all capable and willing to step in to this role and play it very well.
Every player in Storm approached each game with a positive attitude seeing them as games to be won or bonus points to be gained, no matter the ability of the opposing team. Throughout the season they attended training sessions in great numbers and were willing to improve and take on advice from the Abbey coaches. For both Hannah and I, it’s been a joy to play for Abbey Storm and to see how each player has grown in their netball skills and the friendships that have formed.
Abbey Storm has had a very successful season, one for us all to be proud of, an achievement which would not have been possible without the commitment of the team members to training and games; the support of parents on the sidelines at games and scoring for us; the support of the other Abbey teams in training; the Abbey coaches, the Chair and selectors, umpires and all the volunteers working behind the scenes, a big thank you to you all.

End of Season (16/17) Summary: Hurricanes
We started the second half of the season with the same level of commitment we started with, we had a few mistakes from our first half to make up for and the play-off spots were within sight. Our match against Eagles Two resulted in another win. We were then against Sussex, the team we had beaten by one in the first half. Much like the first time round, the game was very intense and goal-for-goal. Unfortunately, this time, the result did not go our way and Sussex beat us by one. Our next game was against Rushmoor, who were top of the table and so far, unbeaten. It was a game to be remembered, very physical and rather dramatic (speak to Frances for more details!). Rushmoor became particularly unsettled when their GK went off court in the third quarter, we took control of the game and won, 47-38.
Our game the following week was against Clan, we had previously lost to them and felt this was a mistake to be corrected. However, the game did not go our way and Clan beat us again. With our confidence knocked we knew the next two games were crucial. Thankfully, both went in our favour securing our Play-off spot.
We had hoped to continue this winning streak into the final game against Brize but were beaten 39-37. This didn’t dampen out spirits for too long as we already had the Play-offs to look forward to. We celebrated with a well-earned dinner at the Crown and Thistle in Abingdon! Division 1 Play-offs here we come!

End of Season 16/17 Summary: Ice
It’s been a much sweeter second half of the season for the ICE girls winning more games than were lost. With an unfortunate loss of Sue from the shooting end very soon after Christmas, the team were forced to rely heavily on Hannah and Lydia for their strength and consistency – and the girls did excellently. The Ibiye, Sue and Mia combination in at the back became an unbreakable defence to many oppositions and the team responded more and more positively each week to turnovers.
Clearly putting into practise training work, this half of the season saw intense man-on marking with set defensive set ups and moving off the ball. The netball standard went up massively as the season went on and communications continued to improve.
After a hard battle in the last few games, ICE finished 5th in the league table, narrowly missing out on 4th place to Vale A. The team gelled massively in the second half of the season and there was some dynamic, competitive netball being played. Despite the position, there are many positives that the players will take from it – after all, we can’t all have our cake and eat it!

End of Season 16/17 Summary: Lightening
Losing some key players to real life (work! pregnancy!) after the Christmas break, Lightning started 2017 with a revamped defense and new captain (Tora). After opening with a creditable performance against eventual league-winners Wallingford, we entered into a nail-biting run of games: for a month, two goals was the biggest margin of victory or defeat in our games! Early February saw the strike of our captain's curse, as Tora broke a bone in her foot, leaving us leaderless; and three weeks later a broken finger took out Lucy (newly promoted to the dangerous captaincy). Combined with a run of tough opponents, this stalled our momentum somewhat, but hard work through the back end of the season from our now-youthful center court and attacking players added to our well-established defensive intensity (#teamofdefenders) to build up to a joyful and convincing win in the final game of the season. With a final record of 7 wins, 13 losses, for a mid-table finish, we declared the score nil-nil and are looking forward to dinner league.
End of Season 16/17 Summary: Storm
A challenging league and season for a team made up of varying abilities but one where we saw vast improvements in every player. We won some games and in the games lost we gave tough opposition a hard time gaining bonus points for our efforts.
The season so far 16/17: Hurricanes
Our season has been a bit of a rollercoaster so far, we've had some highs, and some lows.
After a disappointing start to the 15/16 season we were keen to make sure we didn't repeat that this year. Two early win's against Eagles Two and Sussex NRG Tigers provided a boost to our confidence. There's a definite change in commitment with more fitness sessions, both as a team and as individual players....just ask Frances about her new found love for HIIT! I can also sense a change in self belief and attitude with both being a lot more positive. Our mantra has (almost inadvertently) become 'confidence and conviction'.
As usual in the SR league every game is tough and loses against Rushmoor and Clan certainly tested our resilience. Credit has to go to Kate, Lee-Anne and Maggie who have all provided great training sessions with tactics we can utilise within a game, my favourite so far being the 'off-load'! Our recent win again Weston Park Blades was exactly what we needed and we're already chomping at the bit for our final two games before Christmas against Swan and Brize. Bring it on! :) (written by Kirsty).

The season so far 16/17: Ice
If ICE’s start to the season could be likened to a dessert, it would be the Eton Mess. We have all the ingredients needed for glory, we make one hell of a combo but we haven’t quite got the winning edge of the Pavlova – (yet!).
With 2 wins, and 3 non-wins, (losses to the pessimist), we have had to face some difficult (aka physical!) games. As expected; the cold, wet, dark evenings have been tough on the limbs (just ask Lauren) but not too tough on our hearts (aww). Although some of our games have seen us scoring a few less goals than our opposition, we would happily vote ourselves as having the most potential going forward.
Putting into practice some of the attack and defensive drills covered in training has helped to give us some composure on court. That said, some of our game play relies heavily on the hope that Ibiye will jump 7.5 ft. in the air to pick off the flying ball, Sue Kent will take 3 steps and cover 2 whole thirds and Lydia will score one of her sensational goals from the edge of the circle - and I can assure you, it has been done! Whatever scores the points right?
Despite some tough results for the league table, ICE have seen some great improvements off the court: Naida has managed to get down to just 1 layer of thermals for a match, Jo has managed to call all 7 girls on court by the right name (ish!), and Captain Sue is now clued up and active on WhatsApp. (written by Tessa).
